Today, thanks to medical and surgical
advances, the first generations of children
with congenital heart disease are surviving
- and thriving - into adulthood.
There are more than one million adults with
congenital heart disease in the United
States. These patients require highly sophisticated,
multidisciplinary care - which many adult
cardiologists are not sufficiently trained
to provide.
The Philadelphia
Adult Congenital Heart Center unites the resources of two premier
institutions - the University
of Pennsylvania Health System and The
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia -
to provide seamless, comprehensive care
for this rapidly growing segment of cardiac
patients.
The Center is led by Gary
Webb, MD, one of the world's foremost
authorities on adult congenital heart
disease. After initial testing, the Center
team works with each patient to determine
how best to plan treatment and ongoing
management.
In addition to cardiac care, the Center
offers services to meet the unique needs
of adult patients, such as reproductive
medicine and genetic counseling. Patients
benefit from the full breadth of resources
at Children's Hospital and the University
of Pennsylvania Health System.
The Cardiac Center at Children's Hospital
is world renowned for expertise in congenital
heart disease. Its outcomes are among the
best in the world. The University of Pennsylvania
Health System is internationally recognized
for excellence in adult cardiac care. Both
institutions are conducting vital research
into the causes, effects and potential treatments
for congenital heart disease.
