Septal Defects

Septal defects are a hole in the septum that that usually develops before birth. The defect involves an opening in the septum--the inner wall that separates the heart's left and right sides. They are sometimes referred to as "a hole in the heart."

Septal defects are classified according to the area in the septum where the defect occurs:
